A glow walk for children's hospitals

Family walks that end with lights the wards can see.

Why dusk suits this cause

When the route finishes within sight of the hospital, children on the wards can watch a river of light arrive for them. That one image does more for fundraising than any poster, and it gives families who have been through the hospital a way to say thank you.

Who organises it, and who walks

Hospital charities and parent groups. Lots of buggies, scooters and small children on shoulders.

How far

2 to 5 km, buggy-friendly throughout.

The moment

Everyone turns to the hospital windows and raises their lights at a set time.

Fundraising ideas

  • Superhero or pyjama theme with glow accessories.
  • A "light a window" appeal: each target reached lights one more window on a big display.
  • Thank-you cards from walkers delivered to the wards next morning.

What to watch for

  • Agree everything near the hospital site with the hospital itself, including noise and access for ambulances.
  • Step-free route and somewhere to change a baby.
  • An early finish: small children fade fast after dark.

Children's hospitals: common questions

What time should a family glow walk start?

Start about half an hour before sunset so the walk finishes in early darkness. In summer that can be too late for small children, which is why spring and autumn dates are popular.

Can buggies and wheelchairs take part?

They should be able to. Choose a firm, step-free route and say so clearly on the event page.
